When you’re traveling as a student and you haven’t won a lottery jackpot or have a very well paid job, you don’t want to stay in five star hotel or anything expensive. You want to save money in every way possible, and cheap accomodation, like hostels for instance. One of which is City Hostel, located in the middle of Obchodná street (Slovakia’s version of Oxford Street, Mariahilfer Straße etc.).
The reason I’m focusing on this particular hostel is, that I have personal experience with it, I’ve been there two times and I never left dissapointed, but not ecstatic either, it’s just a hostel (not meant in a bad way).
After booking a stay in the City Hostel, they’ll authorize your credit/debet card – what that means is, that the money for the stay will become „frozen“ and you won’t be able to do anything with them, like you already paid with them, but nobody has them in this point of time, not you or the hostel. You have to set them free by checking in (or canceling the stay). I find this way of paying for the stays quite efficient, you don’t have to worry about the money anymore (just a few euros for the city fee – 1,65€ per person).
You can choose from rooms for 1 to 5 people (check the availibility and costs). Each room offers own toilet, bathroom, TV and also a Wi-Fi connection (doesn’t work that well in some distant rooms). As I’ve already said, don’t expect anything fancy. Simple beds with little CRT TV, desk with few glasses and a closet. It isn’t much, but, do you need anything else as a traveling student? The bathroom is simple as well, with toilet, shower and a sink.
While I was staying at this hostel, I didn’t have anything bad to say about it, but I heard a complaint at the desk (I was about to leave the keys on the counter) about bugs in one of the rooms. Hopefully, the problem was quickly solved, but it doesn’t shine a positive light. What does, however, are the little paintings hanging on the walls, which I think are pretty funny (and nice, of course). Unfortunatly, I don’t have the photo anymore.
The location of the hostel, Obchodná street, is perfect. You have everything you need right next to you. Shops, groceries, fast foods and the city centre is a few minutes away by feet. This is one of the best features of City Hostel.
All and all, for the price you pay for the stay, you’ll get quite nice outcome, so in my humble opinion, it’s worth staying here, if you’re looking just for the roof above your head for the night and nothing special.
